This jellyfish is relatively simple to crochet and beginner friendly. The detailed pattern starts with the classic magic ring technique to create the head, followed by rounds of increases to form a soft, structured sphere. The tentacles, however, are where the design truly shines. Crocheted chains are tightly stitched, followed by loose single crochet loops to achieve the desired wavy effect. This clever technique gives the tentacles their signature look, full of personality and charm.

The Crochet Pattern

1. Octopus Head

Foundation:

  • Round 1: Make a Magic Ring, work 6 sc into the ring. Pull the ring closed and place a stitch marker (6).

Increasing Rounds:

  • Round 2: Work (inc) x6 (12).
  • Round 3: sc in next stitch, inc; repeat around (18).
  • Round 4: sc in next 2 stitches, inc; repeat around (24).
  • Round 5: sc in next 3 stitches, inc; repeat around (30).
  • Round 6 (last increase round): sc in next 4 stitches, inc; repeat around (36).

Mid Section (No Increase):

  • Rounds 7–10: Work sc around (36).

Base and Tentacle Loops:

  • Round 11 (Flo): Work (inc) x6 into the front loop only of each stitch. You will end with 72 stitches (72).
  • Round 12: Work sc around, this time through both loops (72).

Finish the octopus head by slip stitching in the next two stitches to even out the edge. Fasten off and weave in the loose threads.

2. Tentacles

The tentacles will attach to the flo stitches from Round 11 of the head.

Tentacle Instructions:

  1. Attach yarn to any unused flo stitch from Round 11.
  2. Start by chaining 58 (or adjust for desired length).
    • For curly tentacles, make sure to chain tightly.
  3. Starting from the 2nd chain from the hook, work 57 sc back along the chain (leave stitches slightly loose for curling).
  4. Attach the tentacle to the next flo stitch with a slst.

Repeat steps 1–4 for additional tentacles. There will be a total of 8 tentacles.

After attaching all the tentacles, securely weave in the loose ends on the inside of the octopus head.

3. Facial Embroidery

  • Eyes:
    1. From the center magic ring, count 7 rows up.
    2. Embroider the first eye by stitching an x shape over a single stitch. Continue filling it in until the desired size is achieved.
    3. Leave 3 stitches empty between the eyes and embroider the second eye in the same manner.
  • Mouth:
    1. From the center magic ring, count 3 rows down.
    2. Stitch a small curve (a "v" or a slightly arched line) to create a smile.

Knot and weave in the embroidery threads inside the octopus head.

4. Assembly

  1. Stuffing:
    • Fill the octopus head with polyester fiberfill, adjusting as needed to achieve a round shape.
  2. Securing Tentacles:
    • Ensure all tentacles are securely attached to the flo row you created in Round 11.
    • Pull stitching tightly, especially if the toy will be used by pets or children.
  3. Optional String:
    • If making a cat toy, attach a string to the top of the head before closing the magic ring.

Finished Size

  • Height: ~6 cm
  • Tentacle Spread: Adjusts based on desired length and number of curls.

Your crochet octopus toy is now complete. From its cute curly tentacles to its embroidered eyes and smile, this project is sure to bring joy whether it's used as a cat toy, a child’s plushie, or a fun decorative item.
