Crochet Bookmark Pattern – Free, Simple and Easy
Elevating reading style with Free Crochet Bookmark Pattern delivers delicate page marker beauty with floral accent, soothing book companion.
A little while ago, I discovered a simple crochet project called the Free Crochet Bookmark Pattern, and it quickly became one of my favorites. I wanted a special way to mark my place in books, something handmade that felt personal and nice. As I worked on it, I found that with just a few small changes, this basic pattern could become something else too—a keychain, a small coaster, or even a tiny decoration. That made the project even more fun and useful.
The bookmark itself is thin and light. It slides easily between the pages without damaging them or making the book bulky. The stitches create a soft but sturdy texture, and depending on how you make it, the design can be simple or a bit more detailed with pretty patterns. I especially enjoyed adding a little tassel at the end, which added character and made the bookmark feel special and unique. Holding it in my hand gave me a warm feeling because I knew it was made with care.
This project is perfect for beginners because it uses basic crochet stitches like single crochet and double crochet. The instructions are easy to follow, and you can finish the bookmark fairly quickly. Once done, it’s not just useful for yourself but also makes a thoughtful handmade gift for friends or family who love books. If you want a quick, simple, and enjoyable crochet project, this bookmark pattern is a great choice. It’s easy, practical, and full of charm.

Materials
- Blend yarn (50% acrylic, 50% cotton) or a lightweight yarn of choice.
- Crochet hook size 2.5 mm.
- Scissors.
- Tapestry needle for finishing.
Measurements / Sizing (Optional Schematic)
- Width of bookmark: Approx. 4–5 cm (depending on yarn and tension).
- Length: Variable; sample shown with 3 and 5 pattern repeats (rounds).
- Tassel length approx. 6–8 cm.
Gauge and Stitch Pattern
- Gauge not critical for function but aim for medium tension for a flat bookmark.
- Stitch pattern: alternating puff stitches and groups of 3 half double crochets in chain spaces, separated by treble crochets on top edge loops.
- Puff stitch consists of 5 yarn overs pulled through to create a textured, thick stitch.
Gauge Swatch Tips
- Make a small swatch of puff stitch rows to check thickness and drape.
- Adjust hook size if fabric feels too dense or too loose.
Stitch Abbreviations
- ch = chain
- tr = treble crochet (US: yarn over twice, insert hook, pull yarn through loops in 3 steps)
- hdc = half double crochet
- puff = puff stitch (see special stitch instructions)
- sl st = slip stitch
- st = stitch
Special Stitches
Puff Stitch
- Yarn over and insert hook into the designated chain space or stitch.
- Yarn over and pull up a loop, leaving multiple loops on hook (five times in total—the yarn over and pull through is repeated 5 times).
- You should have 11 loops on the hook.
- Yarn over and pull through 10 loops, leaving the last loop on hook.
- Yarn over and pull through the last loop to complete the puff stitch.
The Crochet Pattern
Foundation
- Make a slip knot.
- Chain 4.
- Yarn over twice, then insert your hook into the first chain you made (the fourth from your hook).
- Yarn over and pull through 2 loops, then yarn over and pull through 2 loops again—repeat until 3 loops remain, yarn over and pull through last 2 loops to form a treble crochet (tr).
First Chain Loop
- Chain 10.
- Skip the first 6 chains just made (these form the base), and work into the next 4 chains your treble crochet (tr) as before.
Repeat Pattern for Rows
- Chain 10 again. Skip first 6 chains, work a treble crochet into the next 4 chains.
- Repeat the above steps to create as many rows as you want for the bookmark length (minimum 3 shown).
Puff Stitch Section
- After desired number of rows, chain 3.
- Create 1 puff stitch in the following chain space or stitch (yarn over, pull loops 5 times, yarn over and pull through 10 loops, finish puff stitch).
- Chain 3, then work 3 half double crochets (hdc) into the same space:
- Yarn over, insert hook, pull through, yarn over, pull through all 3 loops (for each hdc).
- Repeat: puff stitch, 3 hdc in next space, until you have formed 4 puff stitches separated by groups of 3 hdc.
Closing Rows
- Create a treble crochet (tr) in the next space to finish the side.
- Chain 3, skip the 6th chain, and work a treble crochet (tr) into the next chain space.
- Repeat the puff stitch and half double crochet pattern over the length, ending without the treble crochet on the last row for a neat finish.
Final Row and Border
- On your last row, instead of making a treble crochet, slip stitch into the 4th stitch from the starting chain to close the loop.
- Cut yarn and secure the last stitch well.
- Weave in ends to hide the starting chain and tails inside the bookmark for a polished look.
Assembly & Tassel
- To create the tassel, wrap yarn around your 4 fingers 10 times.
- Cut yarn, then pull one piece through to tie off and secure the yarn bundle.
- Fold in half and use a crochet hook or tapestry needle to thread the tied end through the top loop of your bookmark.
- Trim tassel ends evenly to desired length.
Finished Size
- Width approx. 4–5 cm (based on yarn and hook).
- Length customizable—sample shown from 3 to 5 repeats of puff stitch rows (approx. 15–25 cm).
- Tassel length approx. 6 cm.
