Free Crochet Leaf Pattern for Everyone
One of the best parts about crocheted leaves is their natural and graceful shape. They usually have a rounded base that tapers into a gentle point, just like a real leaf. Some patterns include extra details, like veins or scalloped edges, that make each one unique. You can try different sizes and colors, using green for a classic look or autumn shades like orange and gold for some seasonal flair.
The uses for these little crochet leaves are nearly endless! I love using them as appliques to decorate hats, scarves, and bags. They also work great as pretty additions to gift wrapping, or you can join a few together to make a lovely garland for your home. Sometimes I stitch a bunch of them together for coasters or even use a single leaf as a cozy bookmark.
Crocheting leaves is quick, relaxing, and a great way to use up scrap yarn. The Free Crochet Leaf Pattern lets you be creative with color, size, and texture. No matter how you use them, these pretty leaves always bring a touch of nature—and a lot of charm—to anything you make.

The Pattern
The pattern demonstrates how to crochet a practical and attractive leaf made from 100% cotton yarn, perfect for use as makeup remover pads or coasters. Starting with a simple chain and working single crochets, the leaf’s shape is formed by increasing at the tip and along the sides.
Various stitches, including single, half double, and double crochets, are used to create a natural, curved leaf look. The project is finished with a neat edging of single crochet stitches around the leaf before weaving in ends. This pattern is beginner-friendly, washable, and makes for an eco-friendly and decorative household item.
Leaf Base
- Make a slip knot and ch 7.
- Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch to end (6 sc).
In last st, work 4 sc (for curve). - Rotate work: Working down underside of foundation chain, sc in next 5 spaces. In very last space, place 2 sc (for curve). FO or continue to foundation round.
Plain instructions:
Start with a chain of 7. Work single crochet across, and in the last stitch, add 4 sc in the same space to curve around. Turn to work back along the other side of the chain, placing single crochets in each gap, ending with a couple more to make a rounded leaf end.
Leaf Shaping Round
- Continue in rounds:
- In first sc at leaf tip, work: sc, ch 1 (to mark point), 2 dc in same st.
- In next st, work 2 dc.
- In following st, work 2 dc.
- Next: [dc, hdc] in same st, then hdc in next st.
- Work 2 sc in next st, sc in next, sc in next, sc in next, 2 sc in next.
- Continue around backbone of leaf to start: work [hdc, dc, ch 1, dc] in next st.
- Work dc in next st, dc in next, dc and hdc in following st, hdc in next, sc in next, 2 sc in final st.
Plain instructions:
Next, work around the entire leaf shape, varying stitches. Place double crochets in the tip for height, and work pairs or combos of double/half double/single to contour the sides. The chain-1 at tip makes a “peak.”
Finishing Round
- Work 1 round of sc in each st around, including into chain-tip at top
- At tip, work: sc, ch 1, sc
- Continue sc around for an even edge
- Sl st to join. FO.
Plain instructions:
Now, go all the way around your leaf with single crochet stitches, making the edge neat and even. Add a little spike at the tip by making a chain stitch between two single crochets.
Assembly & Finishing
- Weave in all ends neatly with a yarn needle
- Shape the leaf flat and gently block if desired
- For makeup pads, make several in different colors; for coasters, consider using two strands for extra thickness
Plain instructions:
Cut your yarn and thread the tail onto a needle. Weave it in securely. Flatten your leaf, and if needed, lightly steam or wet-block to shape. Make as many as you like for your set!

Your crocheted cotton leaf is complete! It’s sturdy, washable, and great for skincare routines, home décor, or gift sets. The shape manages both function and charm.
